Short answer
For a small structural or misc steel shop bidding from PDF drawings, SteelFlo (B · 7.4) is the AI takeoff tool with a published price: Pro $399/mo, published, with 3 free takeoffs, no card. If your RFQs come by email with CAD files, Uptool (From $195/mo for 1–2 employee shops; scales with headcount and ITAR; vendor says most pay $195–$495/mo) drafts the estimate from the inbox. On a tighter budget, FabEngineer Pro (Pro $29/mo or $249/yr) and Accuracy Quoting (from $20/mo) estimate from DXF files and structural shapes, but they don't read drawing sets for you. We haven't run our own hands-on tests yet.

How these are scored: the same formula as the rest of ToolTier (0.4×Quality + 0.2×Ease + 0.2×Price/Value + 0.2×Momentum; tiers S ≥ 8.8, A ≥ 8.0, B ≥ 7.0). Quality and ease come from each vendor's published features and independent reviews, not our own hands-on tests yet. Our founder is a working structural steel fitter. He'll test these tools on made-up practice jobs, and each card says "hands-on test coming" until that test is done and written up. Prices are from the vendors' own pricing pages, checked Oct 19, 2026. Rankings are never for sale. How we rank · How we make money.

Disclosure: ToolTier's founder also builds FitUp Quote, a quoting tool for small fab shops. Because we own it, FitUp Quote is not ranked on ToolTier and never will be, and it has no effect on any score here.

Never paste or upload a customer's confidential drawings, prices or job details into any AI tool unless your customer and your shop allow it. Use made-up numbers to try a tool first.

FAQ

Is there free steel estimating software?

Not a full one on our list. SteelFlo gives 3 free takeoffs, no card, and FabEngineer Pro has a free plan (Free plan: 8 tools, no card). The rest are paid with free trials.

Can AI do a steel takeoff by itself?

Not reliably on its own. SteelFlo's own workflow has your estimator confirm or reject every member the AI finds before pricing. Its accuracy figures are the vendor's claim, not our test.

What about Tekla PowerFab, STRUMIS or Paperless Parts?

They're full systems for larger shops, and none of them publish a price, so we list them as "also checked" instead of ranking them.

How does ToolTier rank these?

Same formula as the rest of the site: 0.4×Quality + 0.2×Ease + 0.2×Value + 0.2×Momentum, from published features, reviews and vendor pricing pages. Hands-on tests are coming, and each tool says so until it's tested.
