Our philosophy: pick a winner
Most AI tool sites list everything and leave the choice to you. We think that's the hard part, so we do it. Every category gets one pick, the tool we'd tell a friend to use for that job, plus a short "skip the rest unless…" note for the cases where something else really is better.
If we can't confidently pick a winner, we'll say so and tell you how we broke the tie. Right now that happens in Docs & research for devs, where the top tools tie on score.
How we score
Each tool gets a 1–10 rating on four criteria:
- Quality (40%): output and capability, informed by public benchmarks (Arena/Artificial Analysis) and current reviews (LogRocket, PCMag, Efficient App)
- Ease (20%): setup time and learning curve
- Price/Value (20%): the free tier, and what the entry paid plan gets you
- Momentum (20%): buzz, rank changes, adoption signals
Score = 0.4×Quality + 0.2×Ease + 0.2×Price/Value + 0.2×Momentum. Tiers: S ≥ 8.8 · A ≥ 8.0 · B ≥ 7.0 · C below.
The pick is usually the top-ranked tool, but not always the highest raw score. Example: in Dev productivity, ChatGPT scores higher overall, but we pick Granola because it does a job your general assistant doesn't. When that happens, the pick note says why.
What "tested" means here, honestly
- Today our scores are editorial judgments built from public benchmarks, published reviews, and official pricing pages. They are not hands-on lab tests yet. When we start running our own tests, we'll say so here and on each tool.
- Every price comes from the tool's official pricing page. Anything we couldn't confirm gets a ⚠ flag on its card instead of a guess.
- We don't publish user counts, test results, or claims we can't back up.
Weekly refresh
We re-check the rankings every Monday: new tools, price changes, model launches, and anything that's slipped. Every rank move, tier change, new entry, and drop is logged on This week's changes, so you can see what changed and why.
Our "dropped this week" policy
- We never quietly delete a tool. If a tool leaves the rankings, it's listed under Dropped this week with a one-line reason (for example: shut down, pricing changed for the worse, or overtaken by better options).
- Drops stay in the changelog history permanently.
- If we pick a new winner in a category, that's logged too.
Money never moves a ranking
Some tools run affiliate programs. Placement is never for sale, and payment never changes a score, tier, or pick. See How we make money for the full details.
